Recognizing Mold in Your Home: Our Guide to Identification and Action
11/23/2023 (Permalink)
SERVPRO team looking for suspected mold exposure
At SERVPRO, we understand that recognizing mold in your home is the first step in addressing this potentially hazardous issue. Mold can be insidious, often hiding in plain sight until it becomes a more significant problem. To help you protect your home and your family's health, we want to share our expertise on how to recognize signs of mold and the steps to take when you suspect its presence.
Recognizing Signs of Mold:
1. Visible Mold Growth:
The most obvious sign of mold is visible growth on surfaces. Mold can appear in various colors, including black, green, white, or brown. It often appears as patches or clusters and can develop on walls, ceilings, floors, or even household items.
2. Musty Odor:
Mold emits a distinctive musty odor. If you notice an unpleasant, earthy smell in your home, especially in areas with poor ventilation or a history of moisture issues, it may indicate hidden mold growth.
3. Water Stains and Discoloration:
Water stains or discoloration on walls, ceilings, or floors can be indicative of a water leak or moisture problem, which can lead to mold growth. Pay attention to any areas that have experienced water intrusion.
4. Allergic Reactions:
Some individuals are sensitive to mold allergens and may experience allergic reactions when exposed. Common symptoms include sneezing, coughing, itchy or watery eyes, nasal congestion, and skin irritation. If these symptoms worsen when you're at home and improve when you leave, it could be a sign of mold.
5. Respiratory Issues:
Prolonged exposure to mold can lead to more severe respiratory problems, especially for those with pre-existing conditions like asthma or allergies. If you or your family members experience persistent respiratory issues while at home, it's essential to investigate for mold.
Steps to Take When You Suspect Mold:
1. Inspect Your Home:
Begin by inspecting your home for signs of mold. Look in areas where moisture is common, such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and around windows and doors. Don't forget to check hidden or less frequently used spaces like attics, crawl spaces, and behind appliances.
2. Address Water Issues:
If you discover water leaks, plumbing issues, or water stains, address them promptly to prevent further moisture buildup. Mold thrives in damp environments, so controlling moisture is essential.
3. Seek Professional Mold Inspection:
If you suspect mold but can't locate its source, or if you find extensive mold growth, it's wise to seek professional mold inspection services. Certified experts like SERVPRO can assess the extent of the problem and recommend appropriate remediation steps.
4. Mold Remediation:
If mold is confirmed, professional mold remediation is crucial to safely and effectively remove the mold and prevent its return. Attempting to remove mold yourself can lead to its spread and potential health risks.
5. Preventive Measures:
Once mold is remediated, take preventive measures to minimize the risk of future growth. This may include improving ventilation, addressing moisture issues, and using mold-resistant materials in susceptible areas.
6. Regular Maintenance:
Regularly inspect your home for signs of moisture and address any issues promptly. Routine maintenance can help prevent mold problems from recurring.
At SERVPRO, your safety and the well-being of your home are our top priorities. If you suspect mold in your home, don't hesitate to reach out to us for professional mold inspection and remediation services. Our certified technicians have the expertise and equipment to address mold issues effectively, ensuring your home remains a safe and healthy environment for you and your family. Understanding Tornado Alerts and What to do When One is Assigned to Your Area
10/9/2023 (Permalink)
After a tornado ran through several streets in Escambia County, our Storm Team was dispatched to aide in the restoration.
Tornadoes can form with very little warning during storm situations, making them highly dangerous to both property and people. To best prepare for the threat of tornadoes, there are two standard alerts that are issued: Tornado Watch and Tornado Warning. According to the National Weather Service, each alert is defined in the following way:
Tornado Watch: Be Prepared!
Tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. Review and discuss your emergency plans and check supplies and your safe room. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching. The watch area is typically large, covering numerous counties or even states.
Tornado Warning: Take Action!
A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. There is imminent danger to life and property. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If in a mobile home, a vehicle, or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris. Warnings typically encompass a much smaller area (around the size of a city or small county) that may be impacted by a tornado identified by a forecaster on radar or by a trained spotter who is watching the storm.
If your home or business has sustained damages from a tornado, give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia® a call at 850-466-3089. Our professional team is Here to Help®with industry leading equipment, advanced technology, and extensive experience with storm damages.

SERVPRO team loading service van to grill with team.
Outdoor grilling can be a favorite family activity during the warmer months in Florida. It is very important when operating an outdoor grill, whether charcoal or gas, to be aware of the following grilling safety tips to keep yourself and your home safe:
- Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your house. You do not want walls, overhangs, or carports catching fire from flames created by the grill.
- Clean your grill regularly. Grease buildup can serve as a fuel source for flame ups that can easily get out of hand.
- Check for gas leaks. Gases can easily go undetected when leaking in small amounts, which can lead to the potential for an explosion when lighting.
- Keep a spray water bottle and fire extinguisher handy while grilling. A spray water bottle can be used to quickly extinguish small flare ups, while a fire extinguisher may be necessary if flames become too large or out of control.
In the unfortunate event that outdoor grilling leads to structure damage, call the professionals of SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County at 850-466-3089 for help. We have the knowledge, experience, and equipment to take care of fire damages, both large and small.

Why SERVPRO Uses Water Removal Techniques in Escambia County After Any Size Water Emergency
3/2/2023 (Permalink)
SERVPRO water damage technicians are called in to extract water from affected home in Escambia County.
Why SERVPRO Uses Water Removal Techniques in Escambia County After Any Size Water Emergency
Broken pipes leading to an upstairs bathroom can drench a home's walls and floors in Northwest Escambia from the area where the pipe broke down to the ground floor. The interiors of walls often hold water, and if the exterior walls become saturated, any insulation inside them can also become affected. Smaller drips on loosened connections create damage in localized areas that grow slowly but steadily.
The multitude of ways and varying amounts of water that can affect a residence in the Pensacola Area is why SERVPRO professionals always use industry standard water removal methods and equipment. We can mitigate the damage caused by substantial water losses that threaten an entire home as well as those with isolated areas. We recommend calling for mitigation services, including water removal, as soon as possible.
Water continues to spread to dry areas, regardless of the amount involved, and as it flows into dry sections of your house, it also damages these newly dampened areas. We know that to stop this from happening to currently dry regions, we have to remove all the water as quickly as possible. We use highly accurate devices that locate the presence of moisture and determine the percentage of moisture content in affected materials.
Without the knowledge these instruments provide us, we might leave some areas untreated and able to continue becoming worse. Unmitigated regions can suffer from extensive deterioration, weakening of structural framework elements, and microbial infestation. Our water removal equipment stops these from happening, but only when we know where to use them inside your dwelling.
When we extract water from a home, we use the air as a way to transport moisture from different elements of the house and its contents into our desiccant machines. Once near our equipment, these powerful dehumidifiers pull the moisture out of the air. As this continues, your home's interior steadily becomes drier.
We monitor how rapidly things become dry to keep materials that generally contain higher amounts of moisture from becoming too dry. Items made of or containing wood around your house, from tables to grandfather clocks must hold some moisture to keep them from cracking or splitting along the grain.
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County wants to restore your home “Like it never even happened” by using effective water removal methods that protect your home and its contents from damage.
5 Signs You Could Have Hidden Water Damage in Wood
2/21/2023 (Permalink)
Water damage in Pensacola home gets restored by SERVPRO water damage restoration experts.
5 Signs You Could Have Hidden Water Damage in Wood
Do you know how to check for hidden water damage in wood? Protect your home today and use our easy guide to assess your need for restoration.
As a homeowner, it's important that you know how to identify problems and hazards within your home before they cause a catastrophe. One of these potential problems is water damage in wood. When you have water damage, mold and mildew can build up. It could cause potential health effects and worsen your air quality, as well as ruin the structural integrity and longevity of your home.
How do you identify and repair water-damaged wood? We're here to tell you 5 signs so you can protect wood from water damage and catch the problem early. Keep reading to learn more.
1. Bubbling or Cracked Walls
Have you noticed small "bubbles" on your wall? Do you see cracks that you can't identify? These might be signs that your home has water damage.
When a wall gets wet, it causes the paint or wallpaper to lift from the surface. This presents the "bubble" look. A wet wall can also cause small amounts of expansion beneath the surface, causing a crack.
While there are many reasons that a wall might have small cracks, consider checking for underlying water damage first.
2. A "Musty" Smell
There's a telltale "musty" or damp smell associated with water getting deep into the wood. It may start off smelling like the outdoors after a rainstorm, but over time, it gets less pleasant.
This smell means that somewhere in your home, dampness is causing mildew or mold.
3. Visible Mold
This is a more obvious sign that you have water damage. Where there's mold, there's water.
You might have to do a thorough inspection to find mold. Sometimes mold spores are too small to see, but other times, mold presents as dark green, brown, or black patches with lighter edges around the sides where the mold isn't as dense.
Mold can be dangerous, so don't hesitate to call in professionals if you see it.
4. Dark Spots
Dark spots in your ceiling or walls are a clear sign that there's a leak somewhere. These spots can spread quickly, but they're obvious enough that it's easy to catch the problem early.
Look for spots that seem almost like coffee stains. Check the area above the spot (if it's accessible to you) to find the source of the water.
5. A "Spongy" Texture
By the time this has occurred, you know that you need professional restoration or damage control. When wood has enough water damage, it softens and becomes spongy.
If the wood is part of the structure of your home, this can cause serious problems. Don't hesitate to contact someone to inspect and repair your wood damage before it's too late.
When your home has water damage in wood, it can lead to structural issues in the future. In the short term, it can lead to mold in the air and ruined paint or wallpaper.
If you identify water damage in your home, it's best to hire professionals to fix it. That's where we come in. When you need an experienced professional to assess and restore your home in Pensacola, we're here for you. Contact us at any hour of the day and we'll be there to help.

Fire damage to your business? Call SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County for help!
You've probably heard the saying, "Where's the smoke, there's fire." In the case of a commercial building fire, you might say, "Where's the fire, there's water." Experiencing a fire can be a very scary event. Even small blazes can cause extensive fire damage, especially in multi-story buildings Thankfully, our dedicated first responders have the skills and equipment to extinguish the flame. However, this can introduce a new set of problems….
How Fires Start
If there is fire damage in your business, there are a few likely culprits for the incident. Commercial building fires commonly start in the following ways:
- Electrical system problems
- Improper disposal of flammable materials
- People smoking cigarettes on the premises
The Consequences
A fire can rage through your property quickly and destroy building materials, furniture, documents, and electronics. The smoke damage can be just as harmful. Smoke leaves soot and ash on the floor, equipment, and other surfaces.
Water: A Help and a Hindrance
Thankfully, firefighting crews in and around Bay County, are well trained, equipped, and prepared to take care of the blaze. However, while the water they use to put out the fire is effective at extinguishing the blaze, it also can cause further damage to your building. The water left behind can destroy computers, printers, carpets, and documents. Furthermore, if the water is not quickly cleaned up, it can lead to additional damages, including microbial growth.

When fire, and water, damages strike, the highly trained professionals at SERVPRO of Bay County have the equipment, experience, and expertise to respond quickly and begin the mitigation process. Fire Extinguisher Use - How and Which Kind?
7/20/2022 (Permalink)
Know what kind of fire extinguisher to have at your property, and how to properly use it!
It is widely known that having an in-date fire extinguisher on your property is imperative to fire safety, but did you know that there are different kinds of fire extinguishers, as well as a proper way in which to use one? Keeping yourself, your family, and your property protected in the event of a structure fire is paramount, and the below information can help facilitate that process.
Q: What are the different kinds of fire extinguishers, and what is each used for?
A: The U.S. Fire Administration defines five primary types of fire extinguishers used to put out different kinds of fires:
- A – used for ordinary material fires, such as wood, cloth, or paper.
- B – for use with combustible or flammable liquids like grease, gasoline, or oil.
- C – for use with electrical equipment like appliances and tools.
- D – for use with flammable metals.
- K – for use with animal oils, vegetable oils, and fats in cooking appliances.
Many fire extinguishers may also be multipurpose, in that they carry multiple letter definitions and can put out a variety of material fires.
Q: What is the proper way to use a fire extinguisher?
A: The U.S. Fire Administration suggests the acronym “PASS” as a means of properly discharging a fire extinguisher:
P - Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.
A - Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
S - Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side

Leading Causes of Summertime Fires
6/9/2022 (Permalink)
Enjoy your summertime activities SAFELY!
Enjoying the outdoors during the summertime months is one of the top perks of living in Florida. Warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and beautiful beaches are just a few of the draws that our area has to offer. Due to our average climate, many top fire hazards, such as space heaters and fireplaces, that plague colder states are not as much of an issue for us. We must, however, consider other sources of fire damage that are common in warmer climates, and take fire safety seriously.
Cooking Fires: these can be inclusive of indoor cooking on a stovetop or range, as well as the highly popular summertime activity of outdoor grilling. Cooking equipment should never be left unattended while in use. You should have a method of extinguishing a fire (whether water hose, fire extinguisher, etc.) available nearby at all times in case of emergency. Do not allow children or pets to play around cooking equipment, as this can be both a burn safety issues and a hazardous fire risk. Finally, make sure no flammable materials are near cooking equipment when in use. Do not leave towels or oven mitts on stove top, and make sure outdoor grills have a safety zone around them free of foliage and structures.
Campfires: No family camping trip is complete without a campfire, roasted hot dogs, and delicious melty s’mores! Properly igniting, maintaining, and extinguishing your campfire is imperative to keeping the fun going and avoiding disaster. Make sure the campfire is built in a contained area, such as a fire pit, and is not built on top of materials that can allow the fire to spread. Do not build a fire underneath hanging branches, or near buildings. When you are finished using your fire, make sure it is completely extinguished with water. You may also want to bury your embers as an added precaution.
Fireworks: Many summertime celebrations and holidays include the use of fireworks. If used improperly, fireworks can be extremely dangerous both to personal safety and property. Always follow the manufacturer instructions when using fireworks. Fireworks should only be handled by responsible adults and used in an environment that is free of surrounding buildings. Make sure fireworks are fully extinguished after use by soaking in a bucket of water.
We hope that you and your family have a wonderful and fun filled summer! In the unfortunate event that your summertime activities do result in fire damages to your property, remember that the SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia team is here to help. That’s right! We have the training, experience, and equipment to tackle even the toughest microbial growth, working diligently to make your damage “Like it never even happened.” So, what does it take to remediate mold safely and effectively you ask?
While every situation is unique and different, including the types of microbial growth present and kind of materials affected, the SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County general process remains the same:
- Initial Contact. The process begins with the initial phone call about the issues present. Our team will gather a variety of information about the structure type, visible clues, and preceding circumstances to begin determining the “plan of attack.”
- Inspection and Assessment. One of our trained estimators will come out and look at the property. The estimator will assess the materials that are affected, analyze humidity and moisture conditions, and document, or “sketch” the damages. From this analysis a scope of work to be completed, in line with industry standards, will be generated.
- The process of containment shields the affected work area from non-affected, reducing the risk of spores spreading.
- Air Filtration. Utilizing industry leading air scrubbing equipment, our team will filter the air to reduce spore count.
- Removal of Infested Materials. Often, highly affected porous materials, such as drywall, cannot be salvaged. Within the containment, removal of these materials will take place alongside air filtration.
- This includes the cleaning and sanitization of property contents and salvaged structural elements. An anti-microbial serum may also be applied at this stage.
- Once the affected area has been cleaned and the air filtered, the containment will be removed, and belongings brought back in. If demolition has occurred, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County can provide reconstruction services for your property.

Storm Season – What Are the Risks?
6/6/2022 (Permalink)
Are you and your property prepared for severe weather?
With summertime comes school breaks, outdoor barbecues, and…stormy season. Northwest Florida experiences more than its fair share of rainy weather, thunderstorms, and severe weather threats during this time of year. Unfortunately, with stormy weather the possibility of property damage rises. So, what are some of the most common weather-related culprits of property damage, and how can you, as a home or business owner, prepare for the risks?
Rain, Rain, Rain: While the occasional rain shower is both good and necessary, heavy amounts of rain mixed with additional factors can lead to disaster. Torrential rainfall can cause flash flooding, heavy rains coupled with high wind gusts can push the water into places where it doesn’t belong, and rainy conditions over an extended amount of time can lead to widespread flood conditions. When rain is in the forecast, make sure your property is prepared. Check window and door sills for any cracks or leaks. Clean out rain gutters to prevent water from backing up onto your roof. Clear debris from drainage areas to reduce the risk of flooding.
Tornadoes: Thunderstorms have the potential to spawn dangerous tornadoes. While there is little that can be done to prepare your property from tornado threats, it is important to prepare yourself and loved ones. Have a designated area within the building to shelter in. This area should be on the lowest level of the property, away from windows and doors, and as centrally located within the building as possible. Make sure to have a way to receive weather alerts, so that you can be aware of any tornado watches or warnings in your area.
High Winds: Heavy winds can result in extensive damage to your property. Make sure your roof is up to building code and utilize hurricane clips if possible. You may want to consider installing storm shutters on windows. Before a storm with projected high winds moves into the area, clear any loose limbs, outdoor debris, and patio furniture away: all these things can become projectiles in heavy winds. Stay away from windows during storms with high winds, as broken glass can pose a serious safety hazard.
As many Floridians are all too aware, these are just a few of the risks associated with storms. With a higher-than-average 2022 Hurricane Season projected, the time to plan and prepare for severe weather is NOW! Preparing for Flooding in Pensacola, Florida
6/1/2022 (Permalink)
When the floodwaters rise, know that SERVPRO is Here to Help!
With the frequency of heavy thunderstorms throughout our area, and hurricane season upon us, it is important for Pensacola residents and business owners to prepare for the possibility of floodwaters damaging their property. Flood water can carry a variety of contaminants; therefore, it is important to be very cautious in flood situations and utilize a trusted professional for mitigation and remediation services. As with so many other things in life, preparation and planning are key. There are many steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of floodwaters affecting your property, saving you both stress and financial strain when the floodwaters do rise:
- Know Your Flood Zone! Knowing the risk of flooding within your area helps you to prepare as storms move through. A map of flood zones in Escambia County can be accessed here: https://myescambia.com/apps/knowyourzone/
- Have a basement? Do not store anything valuable in the basement. Raise any appliances/machinery up from the floor. Consider installing a sump pump in case water does enter.
- Clear debris from your yard. This may include removing limbs and/or leaves from drainage lines. Anything that can allow water to back up to the property instead of flowing toward the street can cause a flood hazard.
- Seal Doors and Windows. This can include the use of waterproof sealants around window and door frames. Use sandbags when necessary to block door and window openings to reduce the risk of water entering your property during a flood.
Even with the best preparation, flood damages can still happen. Keep yourself and loved ones SAFE during a flooding event, and once the waters begin to recede, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County for your mitigation and restoration needs. Preventative Maintenance for Pensacola’s Commercial Properties
4/8/2022 (Permalink)
Keep your business well maintained to reduce the risk of property damage!
What is one of the best things that can be done by business owners and leaders to the reduce the risk of commercial property damage? PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE! Planning for the possibility of an issue, as well as catching small issues before they become much larger disasters, can save time, stress, and expenses for business leaders throughout the community. Some preventative maintenance steps that can be taken, specifically as they relate to reducing the risk of fire, water, and mold issues include:
- Maintain Property Landscaping. A buildup of debris can reduce the ability for rainwater to drain off effectively, which could lead to water intrusion into the building.
- Periodic Plumbing Checks. Following a regular schedule to check the plumbing of the building can allow small leaks to be found and fixed before they become a larger issue. Especially in buildings with plumbing constructed of older materials, it may be necessary to bring in a licensed plumber to replace outdated equipment.
- Inspect Your Appliances. Supply lines from water fed equipment account for a large amount of water damages. Periodically check to make sure lines are securely connected. Check for and replace any lines that show signs of corrosion, cracking, or breakage.
- Maintain Your Fire Extinguishers and/or Fire Suppression Systems. Having working, in date fire extinguishers, and properly maintained fire suppression systems can dramatically reduce the possibility of a small fire becoming a dangerous, large, extremely damaging fire. Utilize professional technicians and vendors to service these devices is imperative to making sure they are in proper working order when the need arises.
- Store Hazardous Chemicals Safely. Do not allow flammable or combustible chemicals to be stored in an area accessible by the public, or near any type of heat/flame source. Follow all label instructions when using hazardous chemicals.
- Control Humidity Levels Inside the Building. High humidity, combined with porous materials, can create the perfect environment for microbial growth. Reduce this possibility by controlling humidity levels using HVAC systems and dehumidifier units.
- Keep Duct Work & HVAC Units Clean. Soiled ductwork can allow contaminants, including mold spores, to be circulated throughout a building. Hire a professional to perform duct cleaning services as needed, and make sure to change HVAC filters regularly.
Even with the best preventative maintenance plan, property damage disasters do happen. If your business suffers a water, fire, mold, or storm damage loss, trust the locally owned and operated team at SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County to help. We offer 24/7/365 emergency response and take great pride in providing the highest possible level of customer service. What’s That Smell?!
4/7/2022 (Permalink)
Lingering Odors? Call SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County!
The smell of something unpleasant, rotten, or off putting can cause a host of issues for property owners and business leaders. From making your home uncomfortable to be in, to driving potential customers away from your business, odor issues can be quite a problem. Along with our more well-known service lines, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County offers a solution to your odor issues: ODOR REMEDIATION and DEODORIZATION. Utilizing industry leading equipment and consumables, our team has the ability to tackle odors caused by a variety of sources, including:
- Water Damages
- Microbial Growth
- Smoke Damages from Structure Fires
- Cigarette/Cigar Smoke
- Hoarding Scenes
- Storm Damages
Along with the use of thermal foggers, deodorization agents, and air scrubbers, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County employs two different machines for deodorization, each with its own unique features and functions:
Hydroxyl Generator
A hydroxyl generator works by dismantling the molecular structure of an odor particle. Hydroxyl generators are accepted as safe to use in occupied spaces, do not cause damage to any of the contents of the structure, and are highly reactive, breaking down a very broad range of odors.
Ozone Machine
An ozone machine also works on a molecular level, splitting oxygen molecules in the air into single atoms. Unlike a hydroxy generator, an ozone machine cannot be run in an occupied space, as it reduces the amount of breathable oxygen available. Some Not-So-Fun Facts about Fire
4/4/2022 (Permalink)
Help keep yourself and your property safe from fire damages!
From a very young age, we were all taught the dangers presented by fire. We learned not to play with matches and lighters, to “stop, drop, and roll” if we somehow caught fire, and some of the consequences of leaving fire, including cooking equipment, unattended. Despite these teachings, the National Fire Protection Association reports that a fire department in the United States responds to a fire somewhere in the nation every 23 seconds. So, what are the leading causes? What can we do to reduce fire risk? How can we better protect ourselves and our properties from fire?
The top five causes of residential structure fires are cooking, heating, electrical malfunction, smoking, and candle use. Let’s address each of these and determine how to reduce our fire risk:
- Cooking: Never leave your stovetop or grill unattended while in use. Be sure to have a fire extinguisher nearby in case of fire. Do not allow children to use cooking appliances without adult supervision. Make sure appliances are turned off and/or extinguished after use.
- Heating: It is imperative to use equipment, such as space heaters, in the methods instructed by the manufacturer, and to keep this equipment away from flammable materials, including draperies, furniture, and clothing. Do not use outdoor heating appliances indoors.
- Electrical: If you smell burning, see smoke coming from outlets, or have consistently tripped breakers, consult a professionally trained electrician ASAP for an inspection. In homes with older wiring, it may be wise to have the property rewired. Do not overload circuits by plugging in too many appliances, using splitters, or “daisy chaining” multiple pieces of equipment.
- Smoking: Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children. Do not leave a cigarette, cigar, or other tobacco product burning unattended. Do not leave ashtrays on top of flammable materials, and make sure all ashes are extinguished once finished smoking.
- Candles: Much like lighters and matches, burning candles should not be left in an area accessible by children or pets. Be sure to extinguish candles when not attended, and store away from flammable materials. Consider using battery operated candles instead of wick burning as an added safety measure.
Even with the best preparation, monitoring, and safety measures, fire can, and will, still happen. When fire damage affects your home or business, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County for help. 4/4/2022 (Permalink)
Are you prepared for Hurricane Season?
As Floridians know all too well, when hurricane season approaches, they must pay close attention to weather forecasts and be vigilant to keep themselves and their property safe. Hurricane season begins on June 1st and runs through the end of September. So, what can you, a property owner in Escambia County, do to plan for, prepare for, and hopefully prevent, damage from occurring at your home or business?
- Have an emergency plan in place. For homeowners, this may include determining an evacuation route in case needed, researching hotels that will accommodate your needs (pets, large family, etc.), and making a list of all medications that you and your family members take. For businesses, one of the best ways to plan for an emergency is to have a SERVPRO Emergency Ready Profile. - Stock a hurricane supply kit. Depending on the specific needs of your family, this kit may include a variety of items. Essential items include a supply of fresh water (enough for 3 days per person), non-perishable food items, flashlights, batteries, and a battery or crank powered radio.
- Storm Prep your property. This may include cleaning out rain gutters, securing patio furniture, trimming trees and bushes, or clearing weeds and debris from your yard. During this preparation, you may also want to consider installing storm shutters and doors. From a commercial property standpoint, it will also be important to have a “chain of command” identified in case damages occur so that work may begin more quickly to mitigate damage.
- Have a way to receive weather alerts. Whether from a local or state organization, or from the National Weather Service, it is important to have a way to receive weather alerts during hurricane season. Knowledge is power, and this power can help protect both you and your property.

When it comes to mitigating and remediating water damages, the top priority is the health and safety of both the occupants of the property, as well as the workers performing service. In order to prioritize safety, it is important to understand exactly what contaminated water IS, as well as some of the recommended “do’s” and “don’t’s” of dealing with it.
So, what is contaminated water?
Contaminated water is water than has been changed due to the presence of chemicals, microbes, bacteria, or pollutants. Examples of contaminated water include sewage and floodwater. Contaminated water is considered unsafe to consume, and special precautions, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), should be taken when cleaning up damages caused by contaminated water.
Now, lets explore some of the recommended do’s and don’t’s of dealing with contaminated water damages:
Contaminated Water – Do’s:
- Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage
- Wash your hands thoroughly after contact with contaminated items.
- Keep pets and children away from contaminated areas.
- Call your local SERVPRO Professional for help with these damages.

The FYI on Floodwaters
3/11/2022 (Permalink)
Flooding Issues? Trust SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County to help mitigate the damages!
Not only can severe storms bring heavy rains, gusty winds, and the potential for tornadoes, but they also provide the perfect conditions for flooding. Floodwaters can be very dangerous both while they are occurring, as well as after they have begun to recede. How though, you might wonder? Understanding the characteristics of floodwaters can help answer this question:
- Floodwaters are considered Category 3, or “blackwater,” which is the descriptor given to waters considered to be grossly contaminated. Because floodwaters carry dirt, debris, and other pollutants, they can be very hazardous.
- Because of the potential for contamination carried by floodwaters, materials that are affected must be handled carefully, and those that cannot be sanitized effectively should be discarded. Porous materials, including carpet and drywall, often cannot be safely restored after being affected by floodwaters.
- Not only can floodwater leave behind contaminants, but they can cause safety concerns to navigate. Often, waters may be much deeper than realized; because of this, you should NEVER walk, wade, or drive through floodwaters.
When it comes to restoring your home or business after floodwater have caused damage, you want a local, trusted professional that you can call on. 2/15/2022 (Permalink)
Fire, smoke, or soot damages? SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help!
Smoke and soot are very invasive, penetrating throughout your home and causing damages you often cannot see. Having a trusted, trained professional evaluate your property after a fire damage has occurred ensures that an accurate plan of action is formulated to clean and restore all the damages present. To understand this process, it is important to first understand the characteristics of smoke and soot:
Believe it or not, there are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before the restoration process begins, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County will evaluate the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The chosen cleaning procedures will be based on the information identified during this process.
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions at your home or commercial business. Practicing Fire Safety with Children
10/18/2021 (Permalink)
Practice Fire Prevention and Preparedness with Children!
Practicing fire safety is essential for homeowners throughout Escambia County, especially those with small children in the home. When children are present, extra precautions must be taken not only to PREVENT fires from occurring, but also to PREPARE in case of fire. So, what are some of the additional steps that can be taken to specifically address fire safety when it comes to children?
Fire Prevention
- Do not allow children to play with matches, lighters, or candles.
- While indoor space heaters or fireplaces are in use, be sure to supervise children around these areas, and prevent flammable materials, such as blankets, from getting too close to the heat source.
- Do not allow children to operate the stove, microwave, or clothing dryer unattended.
Fire Preparation
- Teach your children the different sounds that a smoke alarm can make and what each sound means. If your fire alarm is chirping, this signifies that the batteries need to be changed. If the alarm is beeping, this signifies that smoke has been detected and that the structure should be evacuated.
- Have an escape plan and PRACTICE it with your children. Make sure children know where at least two exits from the structure are. Designate a meeting area outside of the home where the family will meet in case of a fire.
- Develop a plan for young children who cannot exit the home on their own. Who will be responsible for assisting infants and toddlers?
Taking care of the safety of your family in the case of a structure fire is the top priority. In the unfortunate event that a fire does cause structural damage to your home, know that the professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County are Here to Help with your cleanup, restoration, and reconstruction needs. Commercial Mold in Cantonment?
8/6/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County has the equipment, training, and qualifications to handle mold losses of all sizes!
One of the last issues that a property manager or business owner wants to contend with during their busy workday is mold. Although mold occurs naturally and is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, and the concept of “mold removal” is a fallacy, there are steps that can be taken to restrict mold growth within your business, creating a safer environment for employees and clients, as well as reducing the risk of a situation which will require professional remediation.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides the following information about mold in general, mold prevention, and mold cleanup:
- The primary way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture. Issues such as a damaged roof, leaking pipe in the wall, or improperly dried flood water create the perfect environment for mold to grow and thrive.
- Reducing indoor humidity to between 30%-60% can help decrease mold growth. This can be done by venting bathrooms, kitchens, and other moisture generating sources to the outside, using air conditioners and dehumidifiers within the building, and using exhaust fans while cooking or cleaning.
- If excessive water intrusion or flooding occurs, clean and dry any wet building materials within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth. Porous materials, such as wood or drywall, if not properly dried, can hold in moisture and accelerate mold generation.
- In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (such as by drinking fountains, on concrete floors with frequent condensation, or near building exit doors).
- If you suspect mold contamination within your building, do not run the HVAC system. This could circulate the mold spores throughout the structure.
- Do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces without first cleaning, sanitizing, and drying. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel.
When it comes to mold issues, especially on a larger scale, employing a professional mold remediation specialist may often be your best bet. With certifications from the IICRC and Licensed as a Mold Remediator in the State of Florida, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County has the training, equipment, and qualifications to help make your damage “Like it never even happened.” For more information on mold remediation please visit us at https://www.SERVPROnorthwestescambiacounty.com/mold-remediation, visit the EPA website at https://www.epa.gov/mold, or call our team at 850-466-3089.

Summer Travel Plans? Reduce Your Water Damage Risk Before Leaving!
7/19/2021 (Permalink)
Don't let water damages intrude on your vacation! Safeguard your home before you leave!
The perfect time of year for family vacations and weekend getaways is upon us. As you make your travel preparations, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County advises taking one extra step: reduce the risk of residential water damages while you are away! Here are a few ways to protect your property before you leave:
- Check For Leaks – A small leak can become a large issue if left unattended for an extended period of time. Checking for leaks before leaving for vacation helps to reduce the risk of returning to a flooded, or even worse, moldy home.
- Turn Off Your Water – Turning off the water main before leaving eliminates a primary source of water intrusion in the instance of a leak, pipe burst, or appliance malfunction. To do this, after turning off the water, run your faucets and flush your toilet to remove any remaining water in the pipes.
- Check Door and Window Seals – Especially in the Panhandle of Florida, thunderstorms can pop up with little or no notice. Loose, cracked, or missing seals can allow wind driven rain to access your home, which can lead to a host of water damage issues. Checking your seals before leaving for vacation helps to ensure the elements stay where they belong: outdoors!
- Clean Out Rain Gutters – Just as window and door seals can allow rainwater in, a clogged gutter can cause backup onto your roof. This produces optimal conditions for roof leaks. Cleared gutters allow water to flow away from the home, reducing water intrusion risk.
- Plan For Someone to Check on Your Home – The best way to reduce water damages while you are away is to have someone you trust check in on your property. If a water damage were to occur, a quick response is paramount to reducing the effects, and a trusted set of eyes may be able to prevent an issue before it even occurs.
If you home does suffer water damages as your away-on-vacay, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County for help. Our team offers 24 hour a day, 7 day a week emergency response, and has the equipment, training, and expertise to handle losses of all sizes. Serving the communities of Pensacola, Cantonment, and Century, Florida, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is “Faster to any size disaster.”
Reducing the Risk of Residential Water Losses
6/21/2021 (Permalink)
Water Damage? Call SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County Today!
No one ever plans ON having a water damage affect their home; however, it is extremely important to prepare FOR such an emergency. Practicing property maintenance can help reduce the likelihood of a water damage event, saving you, the homeowner, from both the emotional stress and financial burden that often come along with these events:
- Keep Rain Gutters Clear. Clogged rain gutters allow water to back up onto the roof of your home, increasing the probability of an intrusion. Maintained gutters direct the flow of rainwater away from the home and discourage water pooling.
- Consider Installing Storm Shutters. Storm shutters can be an invaluable investment in the Panhandle of Florida. Along with providing protection for your windows, storm shutters help prevent the intrusion of wind driven rain through windowsills. During periods of high weather activity, such as Hurricane Season, storm shutters provide an “added layer” of security for protecting your home from the elements.
- Check Plumbing and Appliance Supply Lines Regularly. Cracked, broken, or disconnected supply lines, such as those for your clothes washing machine, are a very common source for residential water damage. Periodically checking these lines for any issues, and replacing as necessary, helps to reduce the chance of water getting to where it should not be.
Even with the best preparation, water damages may sometimes still happen. If you home has suffered water damages, call SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County at 850-466-3089 for help. 6/21/2021 (Permalink)
It's Hurricane Season! Pet Preparation is Important Too!
With Northwest Florida being such an active area for tropical storm and hurricane activity, most residents know the importance of preparing themselves for storm season. While preparing yourself, your family, and your property, it is also imperative to prepare your PETS as well:
- Make sure your pets are microchipped. If you and your pet get separated, this will provide the best chance of a reunion. The microchip contains much more information than a standard ID tag and does not run the risk of falling off the pet. Along with having your pet microchipped, be sure to update the information as it changes!
- Determine which shelters or hotels are pet friendly ahead of time. If you wait until it is time to evacuate, it may be too late. While more and more hotels and storm shelters are becoming pet friendly, the last thing you want to have happen is you arrive at another, safe location, and they will not allow your pet inside.
- Utilize leashes, collars, and/or pet carriers. Use of these items reduces the likelihood that you and your pet will get separated. You will also want to tag these items with you contact information in case your pet is separated from you while wearing a collar or within a pet carrier.
- Be sure to pack plenty of pet supplies. As you are creating your Emergency Preparedness Kit for your family, be sure to include a week’s supply of your pet’s food, medication, and water as well. You may also want to include pet toys and bedding in the emergency kit.
- Identify the location of local animal shelters. If you and your pet are separated during a storm event, an animal shelter is a good place to begin looking. Knowing ahead of time where shelters are located could help reduce the amount of time you and your pet are separated.
Preparation is KEY during storm season to ensure the safety of your loved ones, your property, and your PETS! For more pet preparedness information, visit The American Red Cross’ Pet Disaster Preparedness site, and if you do find that your property sustains storm damage, know that SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help!

Practicing Summer Fire Safety in Pensacola, Florida!
6/16/2021 (Permalink)
Don't let fire damages get you down! Call SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County at 850-466-3089 for help!
Summertime in Northern Florida often brings with it outdoor barbeques, family gatherings around the campfire roasting marshmallows, and fireworks displays to light up the night sky. While enjoying these activities, however, it is imperative to practice fire safety, to prevent your joyous occasion from becoming a negative experience.
Practicing Outdoor Grilling Safety: Leave plenty of space between your grill and any structures, furniture, or foliage, as all these items can quickly catch fire. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends keeping a “3 Foot Safe Zone” around your grill. Do not leave your grill unattended and keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of an out-of-control flare up. Supervise children and pets around the grill, and once cooking is completed, be sure that all embers and coals are fully extinguished.
Open Flame & Campfire Safety: Build your campfire in a location that is free of debris on the ground, and not closely surrounded by trees, bushes, or structures. Contain your fire in a fire pit, or with non-flammable materials (such as rocks), to keep the fire from spreading out of control. Never leave your campfire unattended, and as with an outdoor grill, always supervise children and pets around the fire. Be sure to fully extinguish all remaining coals and embers with water once finished with the fire.
Firework Safety: When using fireworks, it is important to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines. Do not set fireworks off in heavily populated areas, around dense vegetation, or near homes and businesses. Keep a bucket of water readily available to extinguish fireworks, and do not allow children to handle unsupervised.
Outdoor activities are just one of the many joys of summertime in Florida. Practicing fire safety will keep your activities fun for the whole family! In the unfortunate event that your summertime fun leads to fire damage to your property, give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County a call at 850-466-3089. We have the equipment, experience, and expertise to remediate fire damages of all sizes, making it “Like it never even happened.”
Hurricane Preparedness in Pensacola, Florida
6/14/2021 (Permalink)
Hurricane Season is Here! Are you Prepared?
Residents of the Florida Panhandle know all too well the importance of being prepared for Hurricane Season, which officially began on June 1st. The past couple of years have produced a higher-than-average number of named and major tropical systems, and 2021 is projected to follow that same trend. So, what are some steps that you can take to prepare your property, whether residential or commercial, for the possibility of another active storm season?
- Clear all loose debris from your property. Debris can quickly become dangerous during a storm, with high winds turning materials into projectiles. Trimming trees, removing fallen limbs, and storing lawn furniture in a safe location are all some ways to help reduce this risk.
- Clean out your rain gutters. Clogged rain gutters will allow water to pool on top of your roof, increasing the possibility of a leak or intrusion. Many tropical systems bring with them a heavy amount of rain, so avoiding this pooling is extremely important for helping protect your property.
- Consider installing storm shutters. Storm shutters are designed specifically to protect your windows from intense weather conditions. This, in turn, reduces the likelihood of water and debris intrusion, limiting the chance for interior property damage.
- Check your insurance policy. If you home or business does suffer damages, it is important to know what is, or is not, covered by your insurance. For example, flood insurance is often a separate policy, so flood damages may not be covered by a standard policy.
Keeping yourself and your loved ones safe during a Hurricane or Tropical Storm is the number one priority. Always follow the direction of local and state officials concerning evacuations and precautions. If your home or business does incur storm damages, know that the professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County have the training, equipment, and experience to cleanup and restore damages of all sizes. To learn more, or schedule service, please give us a call at 850-466-3089.

Cantonment and Century Residential Fire Safety Tips

Residential Fire Damages? Call SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County for Help: 850-466-3089!
According to the National Fire Protection Association, the top five causes of structure fires are cooking, heating, electrical, smoking, and candle usage. These potential fire causes are all extremely common occurrences in a residential structure; therefore, it is important to have a fire safety plan in place:
- Install and Use Smoke Alarms – Be sure to check the batteries at least once a month in every smoke alarm. Depending on the size of the structure, multiple alarms may be necessary, and should be placed strategically to cover all areas. Many smoke alarms come with “test buttons” which can be utilized to ensure your smoke alarms are in proper working order.
- Have a Fire Extinguisher Available – Different fire extinguishers are made for different materials. Depending on the type of structure and contents, a different type of fire extinguisher may be necessary. Visit the US Fire Administration website for more information on fire extinguisher selection.
- Make an Evacuation Plan – In the event of a fire at your home, it is imperative to have an evacuation plan already in place. Be sure to share this plan with all who reside in the home, and practice evacuation with both children and pets. Have a designated meeting area outside of the structure for everyone to gather if evacuation occurs.
- Check Wiring and Electrical Equipment Regularly – Flickering lights, a scorched smell, or frequently blow breakers may all be signs of a wiring issue in your home. Contact an electrical professional to address these types of issues. Along with structural wiring, you should regularly check appliances and electrical equipment for breaks or frays in cords, which provide a fire hazard.
- Keep Items Away from Open Flames – If burning candles, smoking, or cooking in the home, be sure to keep flammable items, such as curtains, towels, clothing, and cleaning chemicals away from hot surfaces and flames. Fire can spread rapidly once these kinds of items are ignited, making containment and suppression much more difficult.
In the unfortunate event that a fire causes damages to your home or business, know that SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help. When moving forward with mold remediation, it is important to understand some basic facts about mold in general:
- Mold is present almost everywhere: indoors and outdoors. There is no such thing as completely eliminating mold: mold remediation simply reduces the amount of mold spores present within a structure to a safe level.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Understanding the basic principles of mold and mold remediation will allow you to make a well-informed decision for your property. Understanding Flooding in Northwest Florida
4/14/2021 (Permalink)
When flood damages occur, trust SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County to Help!
Flooding is defined as “an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry.” Flooding can be caused by a multitude of different occurrences; the two experienced most frequently in the Northwest Florida being tropical systems and heavy thunderstorms. Floods are the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters, therefore it is important to understand the different types of flooding possible in our area, and to prepare ahead of time in case of such an event.
River Flood – a river flood occurs when water rises over the top of a riverbank. This can immediately affect structures located near the river, and if water levels continue to rise, affect homes and businesses downstream.
Coastal Flood – a coastal flood occurs when land areas along the coast are inundated with rising waters. A combination of factors, including tidal patterns, rainfall, and land elevation can all play a role in coastal flooding issues.
Storm Surge – Storm surge is a variation of coastal flooding in which the wind, atmospheric pressure, and waves of a severe storm greatly increase the water level in coastal areas. Highly common during hurricanes, storm surge can occur very quickly, and pose serious property and safety concerns.
Flash Flood – a flash flood is usually caused by heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time. Flash floods can occur with very little warning and be extremely dangerous. Clogged draining systems and standing debris can contribute to the likelihood of flash flooding occurrences.
Understanding different types of flooding, those that are most likely to affect your home or business, and how to prepare, can help to protect both your and your property in the event of a flooding disaster. In the unfortunate event that flood waters have caused you to experience property damage, know that SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County has the training, experience, and equipment to help. Understanding Water Damage - Categories of Water
3/3/2021 (Permalink)
When water damage strikes, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help. Give us a call at 850-466-3089, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
When water damages affect your home or business, it is important to begin the mitigation process as soon as possible: the shorter the amount of time wet materials are left unattended, the less amount of damage caused. Untreated water damages can lead to a host of other issues, including the potential for microbial growth, structural instability, and the development of unpleasant odors. When SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County responds to you water damage, one of the first things we will determine is what kind of water has affected your property. The category of water greatly affects the clean-up and restoration process followed:
- Category 1, or “Clean Water” is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon factors such as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
- Category 2, or “Gray Water” has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
- Category 3, or “Black Water” is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
Each of these categories of water requires a different mitigation approach, equipment, and materials. In order to safely and accurately remediate your property, no matter what category of water, our team undergoes substantial training, and follows guidelines set forth by industry leading organizations, including the IICRC. Serving Cantonment, Century, and surrounding areas, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help with all categories of water damage loss. Give us a call at 850-466-3089, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Safely Enjoying Your Outdoor Fire Pit
2/17/2021 (Permalink)
If a fire has caused damage to your Pensacola, Cantonment, or Century home, give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County a call at 850-466-3089!
During the cooler winter months, a favorite activity of many families is to gather around the outdoor fire pit, roast hot dogs or marshmallows, and share quality time together. Fire pits, however, if not operated correctly, can be dangerous and pose a serious risk to both you and your property. Below are a few tips on how to safely place, operate, and enjoy your outdoor fire pit:
- NEVER leave your fire unattended. A simple shift in wind direction could easily cause an unattended fire to spread and get out of control.
- Do not burn near buildings, low hanging tree branches, or containers of flammable liquid. Give at least 10 feet between the placement of the fire pit and any surrounding structures before lighting the fire.
- Do not wear loose fitting clothing near the fire pit.
- Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby and handy when using your fire pit.
- When extinguishing your fire, slowly apply water to the coals, and spread the ashes around to allow them to cool. Additional water may need to be added, and it is important to make sure all coals are out before leaving the area.
In the unfortunate event that your property experiences damages from your fire pit, or other fire source, know that SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is here for you. We have the knowledge, experience, and equipment to remediate fire damages of all sizes, helping make it “Like it never even happened.” To learn more about our fire service lines, please visit our Fire Restoration webpage, or give us a call at 850-466-3089.

Rain Gutters 101 – Preparing Your Pensacola Home for Stormy Weather
1/25/2021 (Permalink)
Serving Cantonment, Century, and surrounding areas, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help when storm damages strike!
The Gulf Coast of Florida is no stranger to storm situations, ranging from summer showers to severe tropical systems. One of the vital steps in making sure your home is storm ready is taking care of your rain gutters. This simple chore can reduce the potential for structural water damages, saving your both headache and money in future repairs.
Cleaning out your rain gutters can be accomplished in 3 easy steps:
- Step 1: Scoop out large debris from the gutter. Start at the end closest to the downspout and work your way to the opposite end of the gutter. The removal of this debris allows water from rainstorms to flow more freely to the downspout and away from your roof.
- Step 2: Use a water hose to spray water through the gutter toward the downspout or drain outlet. This stream of water will assist in removing stuck on dirt and debris from the gutter that may not have been removed by scooping.
- Step 3: Check your drainpipes and downspout for any blockages. Running water down these pipes and watching the resulting flow from the bottom can assist you in this. If you see a light trickle of water, it most likely means that there is a blockage in the pipe. A stronger spray of water through the downspout can remove stuck debris, resulting in a clear gutter system to remove water from your roof.
Preparation is key to reducing the risk of storm related damages. In the unfortunate event that your property does incur damages from a storm, know that SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help. Our team offers 24/7/365 emergency response, and are prepared to assist you and your property when disaster strikes.
Detecting Water Damages in Your Escambia County Home or Business
11/9/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County uses industry leading technologies to measure moisture content in various building materials.
Water damages are not always immediately noticeable, especially if they occur behind appliances, between walls, or in less frequented rooms of your property. Moisture, especially in smaller amounts, may not be visible to the naked eye, which can allow damages to go untreated for a longer period. Untreated water damages, when combined with organic material and humidity, have the potential to develop microbial growth. Because of all this, it is important to regularly check your property for signs of moisture, such as discoloration, odor, or sagging ceilings, and consult a professional as quickly as possible if you suspect water damage has occurred.
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County utilizes industry leading equipment to detect hidden water damages, shortening the amount of time the water sits, thus lessening the cost of mitigation and remediation efforts. Our specialized equipment includes:
- Moisture Sensors, which are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards, and walls.
- Moisture Meters, which determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture meter readings allow us to both gauge the extent of damages, as well as monitor the drying process.
- Thermohygrometers, which measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, our trained professionals can calculate and create an environment most conducive to drying.
For water damages both large and small, know that SERPVRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help. To learn more about our services, or for emergency water damage assistance, please give us a call at 850-466-3089.
Halloween Fire Safety
10/21/2020 (Permalink)
Avoid fire damage with these Halloween Safety Tips!
Glowing jack-o-lanterns and spookily illuminated ghosts are some of the most popular Halloween decorations around, however, these decorations can easily become a truly scary fire risk if not handled properly. With Halloween just a few days away, it is important to consider how to safely celebrate the holiday. To prevent the risk of fire when decorating for and celebrating Halloween, the National Fire Protection Association suggests the following tips:
- Use glow sticks or battery-operated candles, instead of flame lit candles, for your decorations.
- Provide children with flashlights or glow sticks to carry, as opposed to flame lit lanterns or candles, while trick-or-treating.
- If using corn stalks, dried flowers, or crepe paper as part of your decorations, be sure to keep these items away from any open flames, as they can catch fire very easily.
- Do not overload electrical outlets or extension cords. Check your plugged-in decorations periodically for overheating, frayed cords, or shorted out bulbs.
- Make sure all smoke detectors are in working order and avoid placing decorations in locations that block emergency exits.
- When choosing a costume, avoid long trailing fabrics.
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County wishes you a safe and happy Halloween! In the unfortunate event that you need fire damage assistance, know that we are Here to Help! To learn more about our fire damage services, please give us a call at 850-466-3089.
Mold Damage in Pensacola? We're Here to Help!
10/16/2020 (Permalink)
Mold issues in your home or business? Give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County a call at 850-466-3089!
Due to the high humidity and moisture conditions in the Panhandle of Florida, mold growth in local homes and businesses is a very common occurrence. Mold can spread through your property in as little as 48 hours and can produce allergens and irritants which can lead to a variety of health effects. To understand the mold mitigation and remediation processes, it is important to first understand the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, and it is impossible to remove 100% of mold.
- Mold spores are microscopic, float in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, HVAC systems, or on your clothing as you enter a structure
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keeping indoor humidity below 45 percent helps reduce growth.
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County has the equipment, experience, and training to safely remediate mold damages to your home or business, creating a healthier environment for your and your loved ones. If you suspect mold has taken hold of your structure, we are Here to Help! To learn more about our mold damage services, give us a call at 850-466-3089.
What is a Tropical System?
10/15/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help with all of your storm related property damages! Give us a call at 850-466-3089
The Panhandle of Florida is no stranger to tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes. The recent landfall of Hurricane Sally brought a great deal of flooding and wind damage to our area, and the 2020 Hurricane Season is still not quite over yet. Because of the likelihood for tropical systems in our community, it is important to understand the different categories of these storms. The National Hurricane Center defines each type of tropical system as follows:
- Tropical Depression: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less.
- Tropical Storm: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph.
- Hurricane: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher.
Hurricanes are further ranked by intensity on what is known as the Sariff-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale:
- Category 1: 74-95 MPH sustained winds.
- Category 2: 96-110 MPH sustained winds.
- Category 3: 111-129 MPH sustained winds.
- Category 4: 130-156 MPH sustained winds.
- Category 5: 157 of higher MPH sustained winds.
With the increase in storm intensity, or category, comes the added probability of dangerous conditions and damage to your property. When a tropical depression, tropical storm, or hurricane is forecasted in your area, always follow the direction of local officials to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. In the even that a recent storm has caused damage to you home or business, know that SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help. Our professional team can remediate water, wind, or flood damages, to help make it “Like it never even happened.” For more information, give us a call at 850-466-3089.
Commercial Loss in Century? We're Here to Help!
9/28/2020 (Permalink)
Has your business suffered damages from water, fire, storms, or mold? Give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County a call at 850-466-3089.
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is proud to offer services for commercial property damages caused by water, fire, mold, or storms in the Pensacola area. Our experienced team, along with a network of nearly 1,700 franchises nationwide, provides 24 hour a day, 7 day a week, emergency response, and can help limit business interruption by quickly addressing your damages and working toward a resolution. To best assist you and your property, we consider a variety of factors, including size of loss, to formulate a specific plan for your business needs. We categorize commercial losses into three size categories, which helps us mobilize labor and resources to begin making your loss “Like it never even happened.”
Level 1 Loss – a level one commercial loss typically involves 15,000 or less affected square feet. This can be the entirety of a small commercial structure, such as a small office building or daycare center, or only a portion of a much larger structure that has sustained damages. A level one loss generally requires less labor and resources to address than level two and three losses.
Level 2 Loss – a level two commercial loss typically involves between 15,000 to 60,000 affected square feet. This can encompass the entirety of a medium sized structure, such as a small shopping center, or once again, be only a portion of a much larger structure that has sustained damages. Depending on the type of loss, and severity of damages, level two losses can vary greatly in the amount of labor and resources necessary to mitigate the structure.
Level 3 Loss – a level three commercial loss typically involves over 60,000 affected square feet. Large churches, schools, hospitals, and multi-unit office buildings are just a few examples of properties that, depending on how much of the building is affected, could possibly fit into the level three loss category. These “large losses” generally require the highest amount of resources and labor and are often managed by a SERVPRO Large Loss Team.

Understanding Smoke and Soot Damages
7/24/2020 (Permalink)
Are smoke or soot damages affecting your home or business? Call SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County at 850-466-3089.
When a fire damage occurs, smoke and soot issues are almost always left behind. Unpleasant odors, staining and streaking, and structural issues are just a few problems that are created by smoke and soot residues. To remediate the smoke and soot damage to your home or business, you will need a professionally trained team with the equipment and expertise to handle the situation properly. Understanding the science of soot and smoke damage is the first step in this process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke: wet and dry. The type of smoke can greatly affect the remediation process; therefore, it is imperative to understand each before restoration work begins.
- Wet Smoke – Created by materials such as plastic and rubber burning. These materials burn at a lower heat, creating a smoldering, lingering smoke with pungent odor.
- Dry Smoke – Created by materials such as wood and paper products. These materials burn at a much higher heat and burn very quickly, and the smoke created tends to rise to the cooler areas of a structure.
The type of smoke created determines the kind of soot residue left behind. Wet smoke fires leave a concentrated, yet more difficult to remediate, residue with an extreme odor, while dry smoke fires allow smoke and soot to spread through a structure, however easier to remove the staining and odor.
Returning your home or business to its preloss condition after a fire damage occurs is a top priority for the SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia team. If you have suffered a fire loss, give us a call at 850-466-3089, we will help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Storms In The Forecast?
6/17/2020 (Permalink)
When storms cause damage to your home or business, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help!
Are heavy rains, thunderstorms, or other severe weather in the forecast for your area? If so, the following suggestions from the National Real Estate Insurance Group about preparing your property may help reduce structural damage for your home or business:
- Make sure your landscaping is well kempt. Trim small trees and shrubs to make them more wind resistant. This will limit the amount of potential debris available to affect your home or business.
- Secure loose rain gutter and downspouts. Clear any leaves, sticks, or other debris from gutters to prevent water backup to your structure.
- Remove and store loose yard furniture and decorations. In the instance of high winds, these items could damage siding and windows.
- In the event a major storm, such as a hurricane, is approaching, plan to cover or board up windows and doors, as well as brace your garage door if applicable.
While protecting your property from a storm event is important, it is imperative to also consider both you and your loved one’s safety. Follow any advisories set forth by local officials, such as evacuation orders, and be sure to have a storm supply kit prepared in case of emergency.

Fire Safety for Your Pets!
6/8/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help in the event of fire damage in Pensacola, Century, or Cantonment!
Pets are very important members of the family for many households, and as such, it is important to include them in your fire emergency evacuation plan. Following are a few suggestions on how to prepare your furry family members in case of a fire in your home:
Practice Evacuation: Train your pets to come when you call. As you perform evacuation drills with your family, be sure to include your pets in the exercise. Repetition is key with animals: the more frequently they have experienced the evacuation drill, the more likely they are to respond appropriately in the case of a true emergency.
Create a “Pet Emergency Plan”: Just as you compile an emergency supply kit for yourself, you will also want to keep supplies on hand for your pets. In a centralized location, put together pet food, feeding containers, medications, and a leash, that can be quickly accessed. Also plan for shelter for your pet if you home is not accessible. Whether a friend, family member, or pet friendly hotel, be sure to include your pet in you interim living arrangements.
Have Identification for Your Pet: Have your pet in a collar with identification. If you are not home, and fire rescue has responded, this will help the firefighters identify your pet, help calm the pet by using his/her name, and make contacting you easier. The collar also allows for faster connection of the leash in an emergency evacuation situation.
If a fire has damaged your home, give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County a call at 850-466-3089. We have the equipment and experience to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

If your Pensacola, Century or Cantonment home has been damaged by a fire, give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia a call at 850-466-3089.
Dryer fires are a leading cause of residential fire damage in the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 16,000 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year. These dryer fires cause around 13 deaths, 440 injuries, and $238 million in property loss. Following are a few ways to help prevent the risk of a dryer fire in your home:
- Clean your dryer vent out regularly: The leading cause of dryer fires, at 34%, is the failure to clean dryer vents.

Common Sources of Residential Water Damage
5/13/2020 (Permalink)
If your home has been damaged by water, give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia a call at 850-466-3089!
Water damages to your home can be caused by a variety of sources. Proper home maintenance and appliance care can help prevent many of these damages. Following are some of the most common sources of residential water damage:
- Water Heater – Water heater malfunction can release hundreds of gallons of water into your home in a very short time span. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines concerning the proper upkeep and maintenance of you water heater to help avoid this issue.
- Kitchen Appliances – Refrigerators, freezers, and dishwashers all have water lines that connect to them. Be sure to periodically check water lines for weak points, corrosion, or tears, to reduce the likelihood of a broken water line damaging your home.
- Kitchen and Bathroom Plumbing – Plumbing lines, over time, can begin to deteriorate. It is important to regularly inspect the integrity of your exposed plumbing components (such as toilet supply line and kitchen sink piping). A small leak can quickly become a large damage if not addressed properly.
- Rain Gutters – Clogged rain gutters block the flow of water from your roof to the street, resulting in the water pooling at the top of your house. The resulting pooling can affect roof integrity, cause leaking into the ceiling and walls, and saturate the framing of your home. Especially after a large storm, it is imperative to clean out gutters to allow water to properly flow away from your structure.
In the unfortunate event that your home receives water damages, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County can provide quick, emergency response to begin the remediation process. Give us a call at 850-466-3089 when water damage strikes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Grilling Safety Tips
5/11/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia is Here to Help when Fire Damages Occur! Call us at 850-466-3089!

Preventing Residential Water Damage
4/30/2020 (Permalink)
When Water Damages Occur, SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help!
Even the smallest water damaged areas have the potential to cause serious, and costly, structural damage. Because of this, taking every possible precaution to prevent water damage to your home is imperative. Follow these steps to better guard yourself, and your home, against the headaches of avoidable water damage:
- Clean out roof gutters regularly. A clogged roof gutter does not allow rainwater to flow to the street; instead it can cause water to back up into your roof and walls. This, over time, can not only damage the structural components of the residence, but also create the perfect conditions for mold growth.
- Check appliances for leaks. Refrigerators, dishwashers, and washing machines all have hoses that if damaged or punctured can produce a large amount of water in a short amount of time. Often these leaks will go undetected, as they are hidden by the appliance itself, but can cause serious damage to surrounding flooring and walls.
- Maintain your landscaping. Many trees have root systems that can spread underneath home foundations and affect plumbing systems. A leak below your home’s foundation can cause serious structural damages.
- Take care of your plumbing. Regularly check for any leaks or pipe corrosion. Consult with a professional plumber if you suspect your plumbing is out of date or damaged.
In the unfortunate event that you do experience a residential water damage, know that SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help. Our team is available for emergency response 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Give us a call at 850-466-3089, We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!

Preventing Mold Growth in Your Business
4/29/2020 (Permalink)
Is your Pensacola, Cantonment, or Century business in need of mold remediation? Give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County a call at 850-466-3089!
Mold, in general, is a very common occurrence in Florida. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that some mold, over time, may cause structural damage to wood along with damage to furnishings and finishes. Commercial mold growth could also take a toll on your staff's health if not taken care of properly.
Use the following tips to help prevent mold growth in your business:
#1: Keep the Kitchen Clean
Refrigerators are a prime breeding ground for mold due to the high humidity. When left sitting for long periods of time, containers of leftover food inside the refrigerator may sprout mold which can them spread to shelving, seals, and even outside of the refrigerator. Kitchen trash cans also offer a prime location for mold growth to begin, as food particulates and liquids often seep through the liner into the container. Institute a kitchen cleaning schedule to help combat mold generation.
#2: Watch for Leaks
Leaks from plumbing, windows, and roofs can lead to significant water damage in your business as well as an increased risk of mold growth. If you aren’t regularly inspecting your property, it’s easy for these leaks to go unnoticed until they create a larger, more costly problem. Common signs of leaks to watch for include decreased water pressure, discoloration or staining of ceilings and walls, and unexplained puddling of water on the floor.
#3: Run a Dehumidifier
High humidity levels can lead to moisture retention and mold growth. Humidity is an extremely common cause of mold for businesses in Florida. To combat this issue, run a dehumidifier to reduce the humidity in the building. Dehumidifiers work much like air conditioners—warm, moist air is drawn into the dehumidifier by a fan. The moist air then crosses over the dehumidifier's refrigerant cooled coils, causing the moisture in the air to condense on the coils within the machine.
#5: Take Care of Your HVAC System
Your HVAC system can quickly distribute mold spores throughout your building if there is a problem. Make sure your HVAC system receives regular inspections. Sometimes moisture can condense inside HVAC ducts which can lead to mold growth inside the ducts. Make sure to keep the HVAC drip pans clean and unobstructed. And, don’t forget to replace your filters as needed.
If you suspect mold has infiltrated your property, call SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County at 850-466-3089, We’re Here to Help.
Fire Extinguisher 101
4/29/2020 (Permalink)
If your Pensacola, Century or Cantonment home experiences fire damages, call SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County at 850-466-3089!
An in-date fire extinguisher is a crucial piece of safety equipment that can save lives and spare both residential and commercial properties from extensive damage. Furthermore, it is important to have the right kind of fire extinguisher in place for any materials that may catch fire, depending on the function of the property. The U.S. Fire Administration defines five primary types of fire extinguishers used to put out different kinds of fires:
- A – used for ordinary material fires, such as wood, cloth or paper.
- B – for use with combustible or flammable liquids like grease, gasoline, oil, and oil-based paints.
Along with having the proper fire extinguishers readily available, it is important for personnel to know how to effectively use the fire extinguisher. The U.S. Fire Administration suggests the acronym “PASS” as a means of teaching fire extinguisher use:
P - Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.
A - Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
S - Squeeze the level slowly and evenly
S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side.
When a fire damage occurs at your home or business, give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County a call at 850-466-3089. We have the equipment and experience to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Drying Equipment

Sometimes, the use of OSHA-approved cleaning agents may be needed to clean and remove odors and/or contaminants on your property. Staying Safe During a Thunderstorm
4/22/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help with Storm Damages in Pensacola, Cantonment, and surrounding areas!
Thunderstorms, and the weather conditions that often come along with them, can be very dangerous if proper precautions are not taken. According to cdc.gov, the following are some best practices to adhere to during a thunderstorm event:
- Do not go outdoors during a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms can produce lightning strikes, hail, high winds, and even tornadoes. All these conditions have the potential to cause injury, and that potential is greatly reduced by being indoors.
- Avoid using corded electronic equipment. Lightning can travel through electrical systems, such as televisions and radios.
- Avoid water during a thunderstorm. Just as lightning can travel through electrical systems, it can also be transmitted by plumbing.
- Keep away from windows. In the event of hail or high winds, windows can easily be damaged, leaving the hazard of broken glass.
If you find that no indoor shelter is available during a thunderstorm, redcross.org suggest the following guidelines to optimize safety while outdoors:
- Avoid high ground, water, tall trees and metal objects. All of these have a higher likelihood of transmitting electricity from a lightning strike.
- If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle.
If a storm has caused property damage to your home or business, give SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County a call at 850-466-3089. We have the experience and expertise to help restore your property “Like it never even happened.”
Common Causes of Residential Fires
4/7/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help when Fire Damage Strikes!
Fire damages to your home can be both extensive and expensive when they occur. Following are some of the most common causes of residential fire damage, and actions to take to lessen the likelihood of having a fire take place at your residence:
- Cooking Equipment – When left unattended, pots and pans may boil over, or grease may get too hot, resulting in a kitchen fire. While cooking, keep an eye on all active stove burners.
- Candles – If placed too close to textiles, paper, or other flammable materials, hot wax or flame from a candle may start a fire. When burning a candle, always give plenty of space between the candle and other materials, use a drip plate to catch hot wax, and never leave a candle burning in an unattended room.
- Faulty Wiring – Before moving into a new home, be sure to have the wiring check by a licensed electrician. Faulty or old wiring can spark a fire nearly anywhere in your home. If you experience flickering or dimming lights or frequent breaker trips, these may be signs of faulty wiring, and will need attention from an electrical expert.
- Space Heaters – Be very cautious when using a space heater. As is the case with candles, space heaters can also easily ignite items placed in too close of proximity. Make sure no wires are frayed on electrical space heaters, and that no dust or debris has built up on the heating elements.
If you do experience a house fire, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County for help. We have the knowledge, equipment, and expertise to help you through the process and make it “Like it never even happened.”
